background
The Turbografx-16 was released in 1989 following a huge advertising blitz by it's manufacturer, NEC. Every kid I knew wanted one, it was definitely the coolest system in the 8-bit market (though TG-16's graphics chip was 16-bit, the main CPU was only 8-bit). TG-16 sported some of the best games in the "shooter" genre - Blazing Lazers, ports of Gradius, Lifeforce, and R-type. Due to the speed it rendered graphics it was ideal for this type of game. It also was the first system to have a CD-ROM expansion (two of them, actually). And unlike the Sega CD, the TG-16's CD-ROM actually took off. Many, many great games were released for it, including the original versions of Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue. Verily, the TG-16 was a great system. Unfortunately, it never really took off. NEC waited way too long to come down in price, making it too expensive for most kids to have, when their mom and dad could go out and by an Nes for less than half the price. By the time NEC did drop the price a bit, the Genesis was already on the scene, and that was a fully 16-bit system . . . so Turbografx-16 had essentially become a thing of the past. Here is some TG-16 music, frozen in time. Midi Files |
