The Nintendo Entertainment System

Background
The Nintendo Entertainment System is easily legendary as far as console systems go. It was released in the US in January 1986 to a faltering videogame market. However, this system changed all that. It would go on to sell tens of millions of units by the time of its fall in the mid Nineties. Despite from competition from the Atari 7800 (which quickly died out) and the technologically superior Sega Master System, the Nes managed to have a complete stranglehold on the console market. How? Sneaky business tactics. If a publisher wanted to design games for the Nes in the US, they had to sign into a contract with NOA stating that they would only produce for Nintendo. This created a vast plethora of games for the Nes, and vacuum for the competition (at least until Nintendo was barred from making such agreements). Many classic series got their start on the Nes: Mario, Castlevania, Megaman, Final Fantasy, Battletoads . . . the list is a long one. The Nes would go on to be the highest-selling console of time; it outlasted all of it's competition, and it even outlasted a 16-bit system - the Turbografx-16 (at least, in the US it did). It was an excellent system with a plethora of diverse, fun, all-around good games. Midi FilesNSF Files |
