In 1990, SNK, a publisher for Nintendo known for Ikari Warriors and Crystalis, decided to strikeout on their and release their own console, the 24-bit Neo-Geo.

The Neo-Geo was unique in that it was released as both a home and arcade machine, most games for it were released virtually identically to both markets. The Neo-Geo featured graphics and sounds far superior to the Turbografx-16 and Genesis. However, it had a far superior price tag ($550 for the system, $2-300 for the games), which ultimately would serve as it's undoing in the console market (though it thrived in the arcade market).

Being rpimarily an arcade machine, that is the type of game that it is well known for, especially it's fighting games. King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting - these all got their start on the Neo-Geo. It was defitiely a noteworthy system with some noteworthy games.
